Oats Royd Saturday

In a visit to Oats Royd I found a large number of Ringlet, Small Skipper, Gatekeeper, and one Tortoiseshell  Butterfly and a hurried shot in blustery wind of a blue damselfly, there were lots of them about and an unidentified fly and this plant. I think its a Sow Thistle?

  1. Looks like one of the Sow Thistles, yes. I guess they have this name because they exude milk like a sow. Nippleworts do the same!
It's a Small Tortoiseshell, not a Tortoiseshell, I think that's extinct in UK.
Looks like Spear Thistle, Circium vulgare, or is it the hoverfly you're naming?
Well done with the butterfly pictures. Good that Ringlet is becoming generally established. I haven't done my Big Butterfly count yet. Got till 6th Aug!

  2. Thanks for the IDs' Steve. It's the hoverfly that needs confirming.
