Bare Head Tunnel..Shibden

Had a look in Bare head Tunnel Shibden valley over the weekend. for Heralds(pic above).I found 12 hibernating in the darkest part of the tunnel. It was full of spiders and 2 old birds nests as well. Does any one know any other tunnels or caves in Calderdale..???

  1. Some nice photo oppurtunities there Andy.I might have a look up there myself if anyone else fancies it. Might even be worth taking the old nests to see if any tineids pop out this spring.

  3. There must be at least one cave in the rocks below Albert Promenade because a homeless chap set up home there for several months a few years ago. There's also an old footpath under the main road at Salterhebble basin by the guillotine lock.I might have a recce later today.

  4. There is a culvert that runs under St Johns church, Copley. Its on the river bank about 5 foot above the riverbank. I have been in several years ago and there were lots of Meta menardi (cave spider) might be other things as well. Its a crawl and awkward to get in but may be worth a look. Take someone with you for a leg up or a short ladder.

  6. There are a few railway tunnels around. I'd like a look at caves/tunnels sometime for roosting/hibernating bats.

On same subject, please bear bats in mind when you are looking for inverts. In the winter they can come out of hibernation if too much body heat. Not such a problem now onwards but coming out of hibernation in the winter can be fatal.

  7. There is a tunnel under Huddersfield Rd at the Shay. It used to be accessible from Well Head Fields before they built the houses. Might still be.

  8. Sorry Andy,
My comment should read St Stephen's Church, Copley not St Johns.
