Male Eider on Rochdale Canal at Walsden.

Kathy and I had superb views of this beautiful duck this afternoon. (Sunday 2.3.14)   Pictures over on Calderdale Birds Blog. (Link at the top.)

I don't remember any previous records for this species in Calderdale.

  1. Nick Dawtrey says there have been 4 other Calderdale sightings over the years. The previous one being on Gorple Res. found by the same Todmorden observer, Brian Leecy.

John Mather (Birds of Yorkshire) lists various inland records including flocks of them on reservoirs on rare occasions.
