Chaffinch
My first Chaffinch of the year heard this morning in Centre Vale Park at Todmorden. Woodpecker drumming and Nuthatch singing. Good to know that Spring is on its way!
Yes it's great to hear them again. A few Dunnocks singing as well, but few if any Thrushes and Blackbirds, though Mistle Thrushes can sing all year round in mild spells.
For those members wishing to develope the ability to identify birds by sound, this is the very best time to learn them "in the field", as fewer are singing over the top of each other, and the summer migrants haven't arrived yet.
You should be able to hear and then see to confirm: Robin, Chaffinch, Dunnock, Mistle Thrush, Blackbird, Song Thrush, Great Tit, Blue Tit, Coal Tit and Wren before the deluge of spring song starts (which we hope for but it depends on good weather.)
