Took my Scouts on our annual hike starting at Hardcastle Crags today. We were walking on the path under Shackleton Knoll when a Grouse turned up just a metre away from us chattering away to us. Despite my Scouts being noisy etc it stayed with us and then followed us when we moved off .
Yes they are normally a very flighty bird but lovely when seen close up. I wonder if it was used to being fed---perhaps it was following the chocolate biscuits in your rucksack?!
ReplyDeleteHi Mick,
ReplyDeleteIt's a frequent behaviour of Red Grouse. I've heard of them being quite aggressive, even to mountain-bikers. I've seen video of it and filmed a pair once quite oblivious of us.
Another grouse which has a reputation for doing it even more alarmingly is the much bigger Capercaille, though this I've not seen. It's one missing off my list.
