Spiders web

Probably one for Bruce.

I have been observing a spiders web the last few weeks.
its in the corner of my shed door and looks like a garden spiders (orb). The
spider itself hides in the corner and is much smaller than a garden spider and marked differently.
it has been present in very cold weather and appeared to be new each morning. It has not been seen for the past week.

  1. Hi Sue
The spider is no doubt Zygiella and is in the same genus as the garden spider.

The web is an "orb" with two segments missing. That segment has a line from the centre to the spiders retreat and is characteristic of that species. I also have found them active throughout the winter.

    See: http://wiki.britishspiders.org.uk/index.php5?title=Zygiella_x-notata

And: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zygiella_x-notata for a picture of the web.
